Balancing your studies and wellbeing at RGU

Hear from master’s student Amaka about her top tips to look after her wellbeing while studying Cybersecurity at RGU.

My name is Amaka, and I am currently studying for a master’s degree in Cybersecurity. When I started this journey, I thought I had it all figured out from the lectures to assignments. I spent hours reading, and staying up late to meet deadlines, and it didn’t take long before I began to feel tired and a little bit lonely.

Over time, I realised that incorporating self-care into my routine helped me stay more focused, energised, and connected. I would like to share my own experience of balancing studies, wellbeing, and student life. It’s about finding that sweet balance between academic success and personal wellbeing.

My self-care routine started with little changes listed below that you can also follow.

Take Breaks

Before or after a study session, I go to the gym to clear my head and stay in shape. One of the perks of being a student at RGU is that gym access is free which makes it so much easier to stay active without worrying about extra costs. Having adequate sleep is also a non-negotiable for me as it improves concentration, and helps maintain a positive mood.

Join Student Societies

You can take advantage of the RGU student societies, even if it’s unrelated to your course of study. I joined the Nigerian student society, and I was able to participate in activities and network with a wide range of people.

Attend Events

There are free workshops at RGU and career fairs which are not only fun but also a good break from study stress.

Another place where you can actually find great support is through the religious communities here in Aberdeen. Personally, I am a Christian, and building relationships in my church has made a difference in my experience. It feels like my little family away from home. When I first arrived here, everything felt so new and being part of a church community gave me that sense of belonging, with people to talk to and encourage me.

Use Student Discounts

Student Discounts are great to make sure you’re not worrying too much about your finances.

UNiDAYS is one of the best free apps that offers great discounts on everything from food to tech, to fitness and clothing, pretty much everything from your favourite brands.

Student Beans is another great app, similar to UNiDAYS and comes in handy when you’re trying to balance your budget but still want to enjoy little treats here and there. All you need to do is verify your student status, and you are good to go.

Go Outside and Socialise

Another pro tip is to try and go out as much as you can, it might be a walk along the famous Aberdeen Beach, a stroll with friends, grabbing a coffee, or just enjoying the view. Little outings like this make a big difference in balancing study life with well-being.

Key Takeaway

Being a student at RGU is a unique chapter in life, full of learning, growth, and new experiences. What I’ve found is that taking care of your wellbeing doesn’t have to be something extra, simple things matters and can make your whole academic journey more enjoyable.

So if you’re just starting your own journey, I would definitely encourage you to look after yourself, stay connected, and explore all the little opportunities around you be it a fun workout class, or a new hobby, anything in general that keeps you motivated and helps you thrive both inside and outside of school.
